Two years ago I had a problem with my car shaking or jerking back and forth randomly and it did not do that in park. The engine cover was replaced and it was fine. Randomly it would do it, but not too noticeable. It started again, but not as often as before.

In January i got an oil change and a new air filter. I drove over 1,000 miles and my car started dropping 10-15 MPH while I tried going up a hill. My cruise control wouldn’t work. My car would shake after getting gas and eventually started to turn off right after getting gas. They said the screws were messed up on my air filter.

A few days later it started happening again, but not as bad as before.

My car takes a few extra seconds to start after getting gas.
I can’t accelerate when going up a slight hill, but it sometimes drops 1-5 MPH.
It still jerks/shakes back and forth every once in awhile.
I put my car in park today and it immediately turned off.

Does anyone have any ideas what it could be or experience with this?

I’ve looked up the codes and everything, but I am hoping this sounds like a small issue or even a couple small issues.

Hi,

It could be several things. For example, a weak fuel pump, engine vacuum leaks, faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, a plugged catalytic converter, and so on can all cause this type of issue.

You indicated you looked up the codes. What codes did you find?

Let me know and God Bless,

Joe

Hi Joe,

The codes were P0299 and P0496. Earlier I was in park and it did something weird. I’m not sure how to describe it, but it seems like if I was in drive then it would do the shaking again. It’s random when it does it, but It’s the first time it did that while I was parked.

Thank you for taking time out of your day to read this and reply to me!

The codes are indicating an under boost from the turbo and an issue with the purge valve solenoid.

First, check to make sure the airbox connections are all tight and sealed. Make sure nothing is cracked that would lower boost pressure.

As far as the purge valve, that is the likely cause of the issues after refueling. The purge valve is on the top of the engine. I attached a pic below and circled it. Check it for disconnected hoses, wiring, or other issues. Since it is stuck open, chances are it will need to be replaced. However, check it first and let me know what you find.
