Code P0036 H02S Heater Control Circuit

Hi Tweek4u,

Just so we are on the same page, you have the P0036 in the computer but your ABS and brake light are on? This code is not going to cause these lights to be on. This code is a circuity issue with the o2 sensor heater.

As for the ABS and brake like being on, due to the issue with the coil I suspect there is an issue with the speed sensor wiring or the sensor itself on that wheel. The best thing to do is have the codes pulled from a scan tool that can communicate with the ABS because not all can. This should show us what codes we have that will cause these lights to be on.

Thank you for the sharp reply, yes, well currently showing ABS, traction control and handbrake, i agree. thought i would just add it as it was the last thing that happen'd before this issue. I am currently ordering an ABS scan tool so i can read the ABS issue further. As for the O2 sensor, is there any way of checking which one may be the problem?

I don't mind at all. That is why we are here.

This code says it is bank 1 sensor 2, which means the downstream sensor. I would start with checking the heated o2 sensor fuse and connector at the sensor. If these are ok and do not have water in them or the fuse is blown then I would just replace sensor 2 as that is normally the issue.

However, this code is saying that the sensor is taking too long to warm up. The ECM monitors how long it takes to warm up and when it takes too long it sets the code.

Also attached are the possible causes. Unfortunately, BMW does not provide a specific test for this code because usually it is accompanied by others and those would take precedence.

So my new diagnosis tool came through today, and here is what it brought up:

2716 oxygen sensor heater after catalytic converter, bank 1 : Activation

i realized while doing this i had not put back the sensor after the air filter so i am not sure if these new codes below are because of this:

278c intake air temperature sensor,
2783 hot film air mass flow sensor

And then for the ABS, it came up with

5DC0 wheel speed sensor rear right, back right and front right,
5E20 pressure sensor 1

I tried having a look at the engine fuse box for the O2 sensors which seemed to be all fine.
I was going to have a look at the wiring if i can tomorrow to see if it is all okay and not melted, otherwise does it look like i will be needing a new sensor for that bank? and i guess 3 might as well do all four speed sensors?
Also is that O2 sensor accessible,( am i able to change it or will i have to take it into a garage)

lastly i also found a 6128 and a 611E Vehicle speed
under the power steering section, is this important?

Well it looks like that new tool may have paid for itself already. I will just list out by code what I would do.

2716- Yes. I would just go ahead and replace the sensors assuming your wiring is okay. This code is for bank 1 but since you are there, I would just do both.

Both 278 codes are most likely from not plugging in the MAF sensor.

5DC0 and 5E20 - I would just replace the ones that you have codes for. Looks like that is just both right side sensors.

6128 and 611e - more than likely these are related to the wheel speed codes so I would address those and then retest to see if you have anything come back.

I included the location on the o2 sensor. They are pretty easy if you can see them. Looks like they are in the open so just unplug them and unscrew them. They may be hard to get out because they get rusted and seized. So when reinstalling them use some anti seize on the threads just to try and prevent any issue in the future.

How are you?, Thanks for the help earlier it really did help!, so i managed to get rid of the engine problem by replacing the O2 sensor, i have also replaced the front two Abs sensors( still awaiting the rear sensor to come trough), so i then took it for a little drive and whala the lights went off, hooray no lights, i did not drive it for long before i stopped the engine, when i returned and started the engine again the abs and traction control lights came back? would this be due to the rear sensor, or could it possibly be needing wheel alignment due to the earlier suspension change? any help on this would be much appreciated.
p.s i tried to read the codes for the abs, but even after clearing it seems to still come up with the same codes(not sure if my gizmo is truly clearing them, as its there as if it was never deleted(before engine turn on)

A wheel alignment will not cause this. These lights on together are normally a speed sensor so I would put my money on the rear.

As for the light no clearing. That is because the code is what is called active. That means there is currently a problem and you can clear but as soon as the key turns on it comes right back. Once you fix the issue causing it, the code will go stored and then you can clear it and it will not come back.
