Overheating when I turn on the A/C?

So, we got our first hot day and I turned on my A/C. After doing so I noticed my temperature gauge begin to rise. The A/C began blowing hot air. When it started to get close to overheating, I shut the A/C off, and the temperature gauge started coming down. The next day I went to check it out and when I started the car and turned on the A/C it was blowing nice and cold. The fan kicks on at high speed. The longer it sits in idle the louder the engine and fan gets yet the temp gauge doesn’t increase much beyond normal temperatures. When I get in the car and start driving, however, the gauge begins to quickly rise until I shut the A/C off. Coolant levels are good and was replaced in December. Fan is working properly, and the radiator seems to be in good shape. No bent fins and I can feel a good amount of air getting through it from the fan. I suspect a possible thermostat issue but then I got to thinking. Thank you so much in advance for your help.
