I just bought a used 1997 bmw 740i . it keeps over heating and the brake light on the dash stays on what could be the cause of these issues?

For the brake light: Check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir. fill it to the FULL line.
Also, check the park/emergency brake pedal/lever to be sure it is completely released.
For the overheating: Check the coolant level (in the radiator).
Check the cooling fan fuses and relays in the underhood fuse box.
Finally, have the cooling system pressure checked for leaks.
