Engine is overheating in traffic?

Replaced motor, water pump, radiator, thermostat and fan clutch, still overheats
in traffic. Transmission acting up. Can it cause overheating?

Good morning.

Wow, lots of parts replaced.

Why did you replace the motor?
Were all these parts new?

Did you do a leak down test on all the cylinders to test for a failed head gasket from overheating?

Motor locked up overheating prior. Not losing water now.

All parts are new. Also replaced temperature sensor.

Are all the other parts new?

I still think you need to do a leak down test on the replacement motor since it overheated. It may have damaged a head gasket.

The temp guage was pegged in the red so I pulled into a gas station and the engine was running real rough. I waited a while and put in coolant, the radiator was bone dry. After that the engine would not start. I figured I must have warped the head. I pulled off one of the heads today and to me it looked fine and so did the gasket. What should I be looking for on the head to see if there is damage? And when I pull off the other head tomorrow and it looks good what else should I look for that could have been damaged from the overheating.

Hi there,

You will not see all the problems with the naked eye, as little as .030"will be enough to give you a problem, and you can have cracking under the valves, get the heads to a machinist to check and report, start there.

Engine Cooling problem

My truck is overheating. High pressure in radiator blows out to the overflow tank. Changed radiator, water pump, thermostat and radiator cap, still overheating

Could be airlock in it-try bleeding it out-I would check the head gasket as well

I drained the whole system and removed the thermostat and still overheats and losing water into the overflow tank.

Yes white smoke comes out of the exhaust only in the morning when I first start it up. Could the heater core cause it?

The heater core if its leaking badly and coolant is not being replenish in the radiator it will cause it to overheat.

You need to have it block and pressure tested and comeback with the results

my truck keeps overheating and lousing antifreeze some how. i had a mackanick just take a look at it and he said my motor was gone but truck still runs

Check the thermostat if it stuck closed, radiator if its clogged up, water pump functioning if all okay -Get it block and pressure tested to rule out the headgasket cracked head or block and an intake leak.

I am having trouble with my Ranger pickup overheating, occasionally. The problem originally was erratic, but recently has become fairly regular. One of the problems is I do not get to drive it regularly, may sit for weeks at a time before able to start. Now each time I start, definite signs of water in the exhaust, steam, and losing coolant, and sometimes smell it through the heater. No significant indication of water in the oil. While dissassembling the air intake manifold, noticed what looks like water at the throttle assembly. Also, there is moisture at the intake manifold where the air intake sits. Any suggestions?

I have a 1998 Ranger XLT 2x4 4.0 V6 with 140,000 miles. While driving at highway speeds the engine temperature gauge spikes and claims to be reading the engine as running hot. By turning on the heat inside the cab at full blast the gauge settles back to normal. An oil change is due up (i'm 500miles past the mileage) but i have a hunch that its my thermostat. Am I close or am i barking up the wrong tree?

What happens if you let it warm up parked? does it overheat then? Usually if an engine overheats at highway speeds...you have a circulation problem, or a pressure problem, Have the sysem and the radiator cap pressure tested. If the system does not hold required pressure, it will overheat.

Hello,

Can you tell if it is Tranny or Engine Oil....

If tranny oil possible that tranny cooler in radiator bad and leaking.

If engine oil possible blown head gasket....

once in awhile, more then I would like, my truck listed above overheats. I replaced the radiator, thermostat, water pump, clutch fan. the problem is the radiator overflow tank fills with with antifreeze from the radiator. But it doesn't drain back to the radiator. The overflow tank can fit almost a gallon, so as I drive the truck overheats because the radiator is low on water. So I have to add more water to the radiator and siphon out the water in the overflow. I tried bleeding the air out of the system several times already. It would work fine for a little while then overheat once again. I am at my wits end.

Hello,

Double check the hose going from the overflow tank to the radiator. This system works by siphoning the coolant back into the radiator when the system needs it by vacuum. If the hose is cracked or loose the coolant will not be sucked back into the radiator. Please get back to us with what you find out and we can go from there.

ive got a 1998 ford ranger 4x4. when i put it in drive it overheats fast and then when i put it in neutral it wont overheat! ive changed the termastat and the radiator and hoses what could it be?

If your lower radiator hose does not have a SPRING in it....is it being sucked flat by the water pump?
