Overheating after radiator replacement

Replaced split radiator. Refilled fluids. Previous owner stated they had previously used leak-stop in original radiator. Ran car approximately ten miles and temperature started spiking. Replaced thermostat. Refilled fluids. Ran one block temperature started spiking again. Fan kicks on. But service engine lights are on and temperature continues to spike. Heater is working and throws extremely hot air when on now that thermostat was replaced. Not sure what else could be causing it to overheat. Any suggestions?

Have your mechanic perform a chemical test to check for a leaking cylinder head gasket. That involves drawing air from the radiator, (or reservoir), through a glass cylinder with two chambers partially-filled with a special dark blue liquid. If combustion gases are present, the liquid will turn bright yellow.

If the head gasket is leaking, the gas will pool under the thermostat and prevent it from opening. Thermostats have to be hit with hot liquid to open. Hot air wont do it.
