Engine shut off after overheating

We drove long distance, approximately 2.5 hours. The water light/temperature appeared upon us driving uphill. We let the car to free wheel down the mountain hoping to cool it down and stopped every now and then. Regrettably we were in a dangerous area so couldn't pull over often. Eventually the car cut out by itself. There was no more water left in the car. Someone brought us water. Filled the car up. Lots of smoke/steam escaped the car once we added water. Tried to start the car and it just swings. Eventually managed to kick start the car. Arrived at the destination. Turned car off. Tried to start it again and it just swings.car also started to make a funny noise when putting my foot further down the accelerator.

Can you get a recording of the noise? I am worried we may have the worst case scenario with these issues which is the engine overheated and damaged bearings or other internal engine damage and it will need an engine at this point.

A recording will help confirm this and we can go from there. Thanks

Okay, so we got the car started this morning, it sounds sick so will need to send it in to a mechanic. My partner suggested we maybe remove the thermostat as it might be a problem.

Good morning,

Replace the thermostat, do not just remove it. You will damage the engine if you leave it out.

Make sure the shop does a leak down test to check for a failed head gasket.

We contacted the previous owner of the car and he advised us he took the thermostat out the car. So I've been driving over a year without a thermostat.

Okay, then that is the reason for the overheating and the engine damage. I attached the procedure for you and some pictures.

You will most likely be replacing the engine from that procedure.

REMOVAL
1. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT

2. REMOVE WATER INLET
(a) Remove the 2 nuts and separate the water inlet with radiator hose from the cylinder block.

3. REMOVE THERMOSTAT
(a) Remove the thermostat from the cylinder block.
(b) Remove the gasket from the thermostat.
