Overheat, no coolant

Mechanic says water pump, I say no! Dumps coolant fast and makes no noise. I think it's just a hose! After a half hour I put a gallon of water, temperature gauge came down briefly, drove two hundred yards (1 minute) gauge went right up. When I opened the hood water was heavily spraying up almost to the hood! Thoughts? He wants $400.00 to do water pump.

Hello, I'm Danny.

The best way to test to find the leak is to use a cooling system pressure tester and test when engine is cold. This way there is no risk of getting burned. Just fill system with water to not waste coolant and the tester pressurizes the system and you will then see where the leak is coming from. Here is a tutorial showing what is involved:
