Transmission will not go into overdrive

My car will not go into sixth gear (overdrive) when accelerating. I took it to a mechanic and they diagnosed it needed a new temperature gauge and anti-freeze. My husband is a retired Army mechanic so he completed these tasks. It is still staying in fifth gear when accelerating. The diagnostic did not show any transmission codes, what else could be the problem?

Good afternoon,

It could be the clutches in the torque converter. Since there are no codes, it is mechanical, not electronic.

How long since the oil and filter in the transmission has been changed?

It hasn’t been changed since we bought it from first owner three years ago. The report they gave us said first owner had it done, so it was done before 2015.
