Outside o ring distributor leak

What are the steps to replacing the outside o ring to the distributor? I had read a forum that you have to set engine to TDC 0 or something, is this true? Thank you.

remove the distributor cap and move out of the way.

I would use a paint stick to mark where the base goes in relation to the block.

also, mark the rotor to the distributor as a reference.

if you mark these 2 places, you can be assured to install the distributor in the exact position you removed it
