1987 Oldsmobile Toronado car wont shift out of first

i have a 87 olds toronado with 3.8 v6 auto trans runs great but will not shift out of first gear also speedo quit working at same time .dont seem to be slipping just wont shift.was told it was the speed sensor .any help would be great thanks

the speed sensor operates the speedo and tells the computer when it needs to shift among other things. It would be wiser to take it to a trans shop and let them look at it. and run a few tests to see if there is acode telling them what's wrong with it
