Whining? Are you sure its the AC? If you are quite sure I would take it to a mechanic. Most places will diagnose your problem for free. Dont let it go bad because the whole system may need to be replaced if that pump dies and water enters.

Yeah, I'm positive that it's the ac. At first I thought it was the transmission making the noise and I took it in. The tranny mech took a look, and decided it wasnt the tranny. We took off the serpentine belt and the noise went away. The next thing we did was put the st-scope on it and it is coming from the ac unit.

there is a bearing in the a/c compressor right behind the pully and you have to have the clutch removal and install tool. it all comes in the same box i think the price is $30.00. what size motor?

you can take the serpentine belt off and see if you can move the pully back and forth on the sides. if it will wobble a bearing is probably going out.the clutch has a bearing and the compressor has a bearing. the clutch bearing will make a noise with a/c off.as it turn when the belt turns.the compressor bearing will only turn when a/c is on.if it is the clutch bearing you can pull the clutch[have to get a removal tool and install tool] if you have an autozone close to you they might loan you these.you will have to leave a deposit then get it back when you return tools. you will be able to do the clutch bearing without taking a/c compressor off. you will also need pully puller to pull pully off.the bearing is under the pully and has to be
pressed out and new one pressed back in. if it only makes the noise when a/c is on it will probably be the compressor bearing then the compressor will have to be taken off. and you will need a new seal pack for the compressor as the seal has to come out to knock the bearing out.gm has a seal kit for $45.00
in front of the seal there is a big snap ring that has to come out and you will have to split the a/c compressor the push the seal out.maybe it is just the clutch bearing. let me know how it goes...

It sounds like it must be the clutch bearing then since it makes the noise all the time. Thanks again for the assistance.

tuck, when you go to get the bearing ask for a pully bearing last time i put one in 10 years ago the price for one was $35.00. it has to be pressed out and the new one pressed in.but the good thing is you can do this with a/c compressor on the van.take the belt off. loosen the nut and pull the clutch off then pull the pully off.get the new bearing in. then bump the pully on the press the clutch back on with the clutch tool . don't lose the keyway while you are doing all this.

Great. It's a relief knowing that I don't have to pull the compr. off the thing. I was NOT looking forward to that. But...even though I don't think it's the best looking car on the road (not even close) it does me a good job of hauling my road bikes around for different rides. It may have been a gracery gitter back in the day but now it's more of genreal purpose, haul all my sports equipment around.
