I have a 1996 Oldsmobile Achieva.
Whenever I'm driving at speeds over 50 MPH, the car will start to shudder slightly and make a strange noise, almost like a helicopter. If I put my foot down hard on the accelerator, it will lurch violently multiple times as if it's hesitating or trying not to stall.
I have only had this car for two weeks, and the person we bought it from has only had it since Feb 2008; he bought it at an impound auction, so I am unsure of it's history.
Could this be a symptom of a failing transmission?
