1995 Olds Delta 88 3.8 75k mi. AC cuts in and out

Just bought this cherry from a friend who's a dealer. Awesome for my needs, it's a train car 4 days a week, then a 30 min ride to a local office once a week.

I noticed that sometimes I have ac, and other times not.

It will sometimes not blow cold when I turn it on, other times it will blow cold, but then get warm for 10 minutes or so, then blow cold again. Other times once it's warm, I have to just give up and open the windows. Same symptoms if I use direct air or recirculate. I've tried turning the knobs around in all directions wondering if a baffle was stuck, but there is no change regardless of the setting. I can notice a power change when I hit the ac button on so I know it's engaging something at least.

I'm no mechanic by any measure, but I don't mind getting my hands dirty. I presume this is some sort of a clutching type failure. I wonder if you could give me some direction, perhaps I'll try the repair myself if it's not very complicated.

Need to know if the compressor is engaged when it is blowing warm air, this will help us figure out if it is electrical or pressure related

Again, I'm no mechanic so I'll try to answer as best as possible. Normally when you put the air on, you feel a slight power loss, change in idle, which to me indicates the compressor would be on.

If that's what you mean, then yes, I feel the change and would presume that the compressor is on.

Verify that the clutch is engaged.Could just be a blend door actuator that is sticky or weak enough that the blower fan can keep it from moving properly (have seen this) Go under dash and move selector hot then cold and look for the door actuator that is working, this is most likely your problem if the comp is working and pressures are correct
