the car has a v-6 engine with 85,000 miles.the serpentine belt is broken and needs replaced and the alternator has burned up.our question is:
what is involved in replacing the serpentine belt and alternator ?? Is this a major repair or could a person with limited mechanical ability perform the repair ??

yes just take your time and remember what goes where.if you want to go get a manual at a parts store and it will walk you through the process step by step. the should be a diagram on the hood or some place under the hood than shows the way the belt goes back on.good luck
