the volume button on the right hand side of my steering wheel is missing and when i turn on my headlights, either twilight or normal the center of the exsposed space where the button is supposed to be turns into a glowing ember and starts to smoke. the surrounding plastic was burning and bubbling alsoi burned my finger on it. why does this happen and how can i fix it

It obviuosly has a short, you need to disable the airbags by removing the negative(-) battery cable for 2-3 minutes, then on the back of the steering wheel, remove the screws that hold the airbag on. When you pull the airbag off you should be able to remove and replace that switch, you might have to pull the steering wheel off.
