Make: Oldsmobile
Model: 98 Regency
Year: 1990
Mileage: 77,000
Engine: 3.8L V6
Just tonight, my car has been making a strange almost clicking-like noise. I first noticed it when stopping at a friend's house. As I slowed down, the wind and engine noise quieted revealing the troubling clicking. My first thought was maybe something involving the brakes or wheels because the brakes aren't in that great of shape. Idling at a stop, however, just showed that the noise was coming from the engine. Revving the engine a bit also increased the speed of the clicking. Popping the hood, I narrowed the noise down to coming from somewhere near the accessory belt by either the crank shaft or the A/C compressor. Because it was dark, I couldn't visually see anything that would cause the noise, but I could smell, although fairly faintly, the smell of burning plastic.
Wednesday night, I changed the oil with nothing out of the ordinary. The oil filter is in a fairly awkward position so that may be another possibility if I didn't get it on there right because the oil filter is very close to the accessory belt.
In summary, the clicking noise seems to click at the same speed the engine is revving. The clicking is coming from the left (passenger) side of the engine near the accessory belt.
Does anyone have any ideas of what I can look for or any suggestions how to fix this?
Thanks.
