1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue oil change

NOw it is time for another oil change (oil is again super black) and my boy friend wants to change it himself. We have had several local auto parts store employees tell us that going sythetic was a huge mistake and that now we cannot go back to regular oil. Please help us decide which way to go. Well honestly I don't see what all the hype is about. I know some people who alternate and have had no problems. If you have any doubts you can replace with regular oil and just add 1 quart of an oil additive like lucas, slick 50, duralube for example to every oil change. That is what I do. Times are tough and money is tight for most everyone. And Synthetic Oil is expensive.
