Electrical problem
1978 Oldsmobile Delta 88
1978 Oldsmobile Delta 88. First, I noticed a very dim generator light coming on. Sometimes, it's dimmer, and sometimes it's brighter. But it never gets really bright. Sometimes, it's almost off completely.
No changes in the electrical system of the car. No problems driving. Car runs smoothly. No shaking. No stalling. BUT.........
After a few days, I noticed a very loud grinding/rattling noise. The noise is there most of the time, while driving and while idle. It doesn't change with the driving of the car, and it doesn't get any louder. Occassionally, the noise stops for a few seconds. Car still runs smoothly otherwise. No stalling. But the noise is very loud. Sometimes, it is associated with the dim generator light. But not always.
The noise seems to be coming from the generator area when the hood is open (near the air compressor and AC coolant storage tank). Car does not get hot. Sometimes, it takes a while for the noise to start. Other times, it begins on start-up.
Please advise.
