1992 Oldsmobile Cutlass 6 cyl Automatic 103000 miles

My car will just die randomly. I can usually restart but sometimes have to try a couple of times. It does this at stop signs and while driving down the road with no warning. All the dashboard lights come on and it quits moving. I have had it in the shop 4 times. The first time I was driving in a round-about. The mechanic said I needed a cooling fan. Then a couple weeks go by and it happened again driving down a busy road. This time I had gunk on some stuff. Then a couple more weeks go by and it did it at a stop sign. The mechanic had it for a week and it never would mess up on him. So I get it back and it does it again driving down the road. This time I took it to a dealership. Of course it did not mess up on them during the week they had it . Now I have had it back for 3 weeks and it did it today at a stop sign. I really do not know what to do . Please help.

Has the check engine light come on? Have they checked for vacuum leaks, fuel pressure, and the catylatic converter?

They claimed they have checked everything. This past week they said it was an ignition module. They changed it. I drove it about a mile before it stopped again. They have it again now, checking to see if the new part is faulty. Everytime I suggest something, they say they have checked it. I have not mentioned Vacuum leaks though, so I will. Thanks for the response.--Robin

WHen it dies, if you cycle the key from off to on, can you hear the fuel pump working?

Since I am usually in the middle of the traffic when it occurs. I quickly put it in neutral amd it immediately turns over. One of the last times it hapened, it kind of jerked forward a couple of times and acted like it might die again. Then it regained normal behavior. I am sorry I never listened to see if the fuel pump was working, I was always too afraid someone was going to run into me.
Thank you,
Robin

It's hard for me to tell. If I had to guess, I would say it is a bad ignition module, but they told you it was fine.

Actually that is what they said, but it still happened after they replaced it. I asked them if the replacement could be faulty, to which I received an eye roll. I know that some times even a new part can be bad. They said they would check it to see. Thank you so much for your advice and help.

I am very interested to find out if you have figured it out yet. I have a 94 Olds Cutlass Supreme that is doing the same thing. Also occasionally it won't start. It clicks once and if I wait and try later it will usually start. My mechanic says the 2 aren't related. He replaced the starter already, but that wasn't it.

The stalling seems to be worse when the weather is hot...My mechanic is very honest and has been working on this for 3 months. He has replaced the cam shaft sensor, relays, etc. He has a hard time getting it to do it for him. Some days there is no problem and other days I have to limp back to the shop. So frustrating!

I agree. I have seen new parts that were bad many times.
