1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass Problems with torquing after rebuil

Engine Mechanical problem
1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Have no idea what may be happening, this is the first time this engine has been rebuilt by me. I know I'm not doing something right.
Having got the engine back together, attached to the transmission, it becomes impossible to turn by hand or with torque wrench. I've looked in books and such but haven't been able to find anything helpful.
I need to know if anyone has come across a similar problem and if so how in the world was it fixed?
Any and all would be helpful at this point.

It sounds like the torque converter isn't fully engaged into the front pump and is binding. Check that and let me know what you find.

Check that and let me know what you find.[/quote:e3785d1a53]I apologize about the delayed reply, my dad, brother and I wound up taking the engine back out after disconnecting it from the transmittion. My dad wound up taking it all apart and messing around with some bolts inside the engine, he thinks he had them in the wrong positions before because now we can crank the engine by hand and with the wrench. But I've suggested and insisted we keep an eye out for what you've told me. Thank you for all your help.

Joe[/quote:ba8eef471c]Well in the end it seems to have just been those missplaced bolts, we got the engine back together and attached to the transmittion. Got it all hooked back up to the rest of the hoses and such in the car and got it fired up this afternoon. There seems to be a problem with the thermastat, but there was one before we got to rebuilding the engine so we don't know exactly what to do there either. Slowly but surely we're getting her back on the road. Thanks for your help again!

What I remember being told is when it was hooked up again that instead of it opening at 165 degrees it opened at 170, so my dad left it unhooked. And he's sure he's got a sensor wire crossed or something because the hot engine light is on all the time now. I'm not too sure about that because the engine gets hot quicker than it did before we took it apart. So I'm at a loss.
