when i turn very sharp, both left and right, its as if im brake tourqing it and it is extremely rough and jerky. it also is making a very ugly growl while turning. a friend told me my half-shafts have to be replaced. if this is correct, how do i do this?

yes, your axles aka half shafts are probably shot. usually its the cv joints inside of the shaft but most of the time its more of a problem and just as expensive to change the cv joints as it is the whole shaft.
