When the a/c is turned on engine RPM increases & dash, steering wheel ,etc. start vibrating. When a/c is turned off, vibration stops. I think the compressor is going out & is dragging, causing strain on the engine as it drives the pulley.I'm hoping it may just be the clutch bearings. Can I replace the clutch without discharing the unit? I do not have a vacum pump & other tools needed for a complete compressor swap.

yes you can replace the clutch but the bearings are inside the compressor. I would suggest taking it to your local shop or dealership.

Turns out the problem was with the a/c blower motor. Apparently a rat had found a poison bait cube & stored it inside the blower. When the fan was turn up past the lowest speed, the cube would cause the motor to spin out of balance & cause the vibration & noise. I'm still trying to find out how he was able to get inside the a/c ducting. This is an 04 Alero in showroom condition. This bait cube is about 3" long x 1.5 " diameter.
