The steering wheel is loose as if not secure, i.e., you can push it to the left an it moves. how do I secure the steering wheel so it stays firmly in place?

Check the Idler/pitman arms, Tie rods, ball joints, and wheel bearings. If all good than the intermediate steering shaft might need replacing.
