1995 Oldsmobile 88 Cam Postion Sensor

1995 Oldsmobile 88 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic unknow miles

I started to replace the cam position sensor on an 1995 Oldsmobile 88, 3.8L Engine. Since this is the first time that I've had the chance to replace one an Olds I had a diagram printed to show me the location. Well, the diagram wasn't exactly correct and a friend of mine said the last one he did on the same year and engine was on top of the timing cover. I've looked all over and can't tell exactly where its' at. So I'm wondering what the sensor is behind and the specific location. Also, steps to getting to it would be appreciated.

Friend was right. It is located under hood, passenger side, lower engine area, below water pump, mounted on timing cover (pictured below). Just disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect sensor harness connector. Remove camshaft position sensor bolt and remove sensor. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten sensor bolt to 35 - 53 INCH Lbs. (4.0 - 6.0 N.m)

Will I need to remove the water pump pulley to gain acces to it?

Just remove the right front wheel and the right inner fender access cover/splash shield. Will be able to reach sensor from there.

The last diagram that you posted was the one I had, but I had a heck of a time finding it through the wheel well behind the splash guard, only a medium-small opening. Thank you for your help.

You can try from the top but I am not sure of what all will need removed in that area to reach it ? Trial and error will prevail so just try from top if you absolutely can't fit hand into wheel well opening. Or get someone with smaller hands if possible? Just has one screw holding it on so wouldn't take an experienced mechanic to remove it. Let me know if you need further assistance.

I'll be back over to the vehicle tomorrow and reach in. I didn't do a whole lot of feeling around since I was sick. I'll probably remove the water pump pulley and go from the bottom since it will open the area up and it will be closer. I've worked on a lot of vehicles throughout the years and oddly enough, I've never worked on an olds. Thanks
