Oil pressure gauge won't register. I don't know if my oil pump is working. How do I determine if it's the pump or gauge?

Hi,

If the oil pump isn't working, you will hear all kinds of knocking and ticking from the engine. However, if you want to confirm it is, here is what needs to be done.

Contact a local parts store and ask if they have a mechanical oil pressure gauge for testing. Most will lend one to you.

Remove the oil pressure switch from the engine and install the mechanical connector. Start the engine and see if there is pressure. A mechanical gauge bypasses the electronics.

The oil pressure switch is at the top rear of the engine near the distributor. They actually make a socket for the switch that will be needed. See pic 1 for location.

If you look at picture 2, it provides the manufacturer's oil pressure specifications.

Try this and let me know the results. Also, let me know if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe
