oil light on the dashboard and the engine shut off while driving on the motorway?

The oil light comes on because the engine has lost oil pressure which could be due to the lack of engine oil, have you checked it? If there is no oil in the engine it could be locked up and needs replacement. You can confirm by installing a breaker bar on the front of the engine (balancer) and try to turn the engine by hand.
