Oil leak near back of valve cover, or distributor onto the exhaust system causing smoke and smell from engine.

Hello,
What happens on these engines is the oil return galleys get plugged up and then fill with oil which in turn leaks. Here is a guide of what it takes to remove the valve cover to confirm the problem:
