While driving the odometer/gear display stopped working

The odometer/gear display went out while driving down the highway. The Batter light in the message center came on and the cruise and temperature gauge stop working at the same time. The display will work if the ignition key is in the "off" position (first click clockwise from "lock" position). I have checked fuses and the cold solder joint issue with no luck. The charging system is working fine.
