So way back when I pulled the wrong fuse for my door lights and it fried my odometer, dealer quoted me almost $1,000.00 to replace it. but I definitely couldn’t afford that so I found a used one that had close miles but more than what the vehicle actually has, and installed it myself. I had no plans to sell it but things have changed and I think you can see my issue. Since the odometer has more miles and hasn’t been rolled back I wasn’t sure if this would cause me issues at a dealer if I do a trade in? Any information would be great. I know that in PA I can make it exempt since it is over ten years old but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do that or not. Thank you!

Good evening.

The burden of proof is on you to prove that the mileage is less.

You need a repair order, the old odometer and then maybe they will accept the mileage.

This is up to the dealer. I doubt they will help you.

I have the old odometer but it reads 888888, and no repair order since I did it myself. I was told before they could see the actual mileage when they plugged into the vehicles computer? Thanks for your help.

No, the mileage is not stored in the PCM, it is stored in the cluster.

You are in a catch 22 situation here.

So I’m assuming since the old odometer reads all 8’s it isn’t recorded inside anymore then? Not trying to sound like an idiot, just making sure, haha.
