Is it common for o2 sensor wires to be damaged and if so where does the damage typically happen?

Hi Kelly,

It isn't as common as one would think considering they are right next to the exhaust and heat. However, if there is damage, it is usually where the wiring is closest to the transmission or the exhaust. Also, it isn't uncommon for the connectors to fail.

What I would suggest is this. When the engine is cold, start at the sensor and follow the wiring as far as you can to see if it rubbed against anything that may have damaged it. Also, if you follow it far enough, you will find a connector. Make sure it is in good condition as well.

I attached two pics below showing the locations of the sensors. There should be heat shields protecting the wiring near the exhaust, so check for that as well.

If you need to check one of the sensors, here is a link that explains how that is done:

If you determine one needs to be replaced, here is a link to help:

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe
