When a Ford over drive light flashes, it is telling you that there is some sort of issue with the transmission. A local transmission shop should be able to scan it and see what the issue is

If the OD light continues to flash, the computer has identified a problem within the system. What you need to do is have the computer scanned for codes.

Most parts stores will do it for free.

Let me know what you find.

the overdrive(lockout) light on the dash comes on after about five minutes of run time then flashes for as long as the car is driven. Is this a modual going out or a problem with the transmission?

Hi:
It could be a module. Have you had the computer scanned for codes?

That is an indication that the transmission control system has identified a malfunction and stored a code. You will need a professional scan tool to be able to retrieve the stored TCM codes.

i was driving on freeway, and noticed the o/d off light flashing, i didn't notice anything weird/different, until i was coming to a stop. the first stop light i kinda thought it was just me; i was wearing flip flops and maybe my foot slipped or something. then at the next stop sign, it was almost kind of like a hesitation? our speedometer was discovered last weekend is 5 mph off. please help.

Good afternoon,

With the light on, there is a code stored in the system. In most cases, it is the torque converter that is the issue.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/automatic-transmission-problems

The first thing I would do is change the fluid and filter. It may be starving for fluid from the filter being partially clogged.

The computer has identified a problem. The light's flashing is telling you to have the computer scanned to identify where the problem is coming from.

I have a 1996 Ford Explorer 2-wheel drive 4 cylinder. As I am riding, once I am riding a few miles, the o/d off...overdrive off light starts to blink on and off. I can feel the truck sort of jerk right before this starts. Once the engine is turned off, I can again ride for a while and then it happens again. This has been occurring for about 2 weeks now.

Hi there,

You will need to get a scan done as this is a fault light, there will be a code set that will indicate where the problem will lie, start here.

Well with everything that I can find it could be the overdrive button or the torque converter is also a very common problem. What I need you to do is see if you can the trouble codes from the transmission. What you need is a paper clip and a test light to get codes. Use the pic below to hook up. The top pic is what to use. Hook the test light up how they show the meter hooked up. Now they show a jumper wire from the self test input (single small connecto) to the signal return on the larger test connector that is where you put the paper clip so that they are connected. Now turn key on engine off and the test light will start to blink. It will blink once short pause then blink twice and longer pause then it will go to the next code. This is a code a 12 it means it is going into self test mode. Now with the rest of the blinks just count them in the same way get back to me on what you find.

These codes are indicating a transmission problem. Now there is a couple of tests for you to perform if you like. One is a drive test that you can do and then pull the codes again to see what is still present.
The other is a pin test. I say clear the codes and then do the drive test and see what codes come back. Here is how the drive test is to be done ok.
First warm the engine up to normal operating temp. Ensure that the transmission is full. Now put the truck into into drive and press the O/D switch to turn off overdrive. Your light should be on. Now get up to 40mph and hold it there for 15 sec (30 seconds if you are 4000 ft elevation or more). Now push the O/D button to go into overdrive and accel to 50 mph and hold for 15 sec (30 if above 4000 ft). Now while maintaining your speed use your other foot and light press on the brake pedal (just enough to make the lights come on) now maintain 50mph for another 5 secs. Now bring the truck to a stop for 20 seconds while keeping it in drive (like you are at a stoplight for 20 seconds). This driving cycle need to be done 5 times then we need to see what codes come back. If the codes come back then you will need to have a digital multi meter so we can do some pin tests at the transmission wire harness ok. Let me know how it goes.

1999 Ford Explorer 4x4 auto trans v6 100,000+ miles.
The overdrive light flashes from time to time on vehicle. When it is flashing the transmission down shifts hard and up shifts same. there are times you feel a jerk or bump much like a stall torque. Fluids have been changed and was told a transmission module. Help.

I have a 2000 Ford Explorer 4.0 4x4. I was doing some trail riding today didn't give me any problems but then I get back on the highway and I started to notice it wouldn't shift until 3,000 rpm's, then it stopped shifting at all. drove it home in 2nd gear and the overdrive light started flashing has 2000 xxx miles on it I'm not sure what to do; solenoid change or just replace the transmission? Not sure what to do. never gave me any problem at all still pulls strong in 1st and second. I don't want to waist the money on solenoids if it wont fix it. they are like $60.00 a piece for those. any help would be cool.thanks

Good afternoon,

This issue is caused mostly by the torque converter. It may either be stuck in lock up or will not lock up. When that happens, the light will flash and disable converter commands.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/automatic-transmission-problems

Are there any codes set in the system?

The first thing I would do is change the fluid and filter. Check the magnet in the pan for any metal or debris.

Since the check engine light came on, the vechicle's computer has set a code or several codes. Are you able to scan the computer for codes.

You mentioned that the trannsmission was shifting fine before. Did anything unusual happen while driving that would indicate a problem just before the check engine light came on and the overdrive light started flashing. Strange noises? Tranny overheating? Towing a large load? Trouble going into 4x4? It seems unlikely that a vehicle with barely 70,000 miles would blow a tranny.

You may have a bad shifting solenoid.

chances are that the transmission was slipping and the computer put it in safe mode, it will probably need to come out to be fixed...I recommend an actual transmission repair shop look at it
