Not sure a idle looking symbol comes on when it shuts off

If car is in gear at stoplight idling it shuts off but will stay on in park. I also tried to basically lightly power-brake it and it stays running.

Those are symptoms of the Engine Computer lost its memory when the battery was recently disconnected. It needs to relearn "minimum throttle" before it will know when it must be in control of idle speed. To meet the conditions for the relearn to take place, drive at highway speed with the engine warmed up, then coast for at least seven seconds without touching the pedals.
