I got a 2001 Mitsubishi galant that I can't get to start. I got in the car to start it and it started for about 2 sec and then died and won't start back. the fuel pump is not kicking on so I took it out and hook it up directly and it worked so I changed filter and put back in and again it would not work. So I changed the fuel pump relay and still wouldn't work. So I took the old pump back out and hooked up a new fuel pump, and again it did not work. I checked to see if there was power to the relay and I got nothing with the key off and the key on. So my question is, what would cause there to be no power to both the fuel pump and the relay... and it does have the anti theft system equipped...

Hello,

There is a fuse #13 that needs to be checked which powers the relay here is a guide to help us get started and the fuel pump and engine wiring diagrams so you can see how the system works.

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what happens.

Power at the fuel pump? Are you sure about that?

It's only supposed to power for the first 2 seconds when the key is first turned on.

No am not really for sure cause I didn't know where to really touch the test light at thE fuel pum. So I touch it in the wire harness and the fuel pump and the test light come on in like 2 or 4 wires back there with the key on. But not for sure if that was right

If you're having trouble working a test light, then we don't have much chance of solving this. It looks like both the power wire and the ground wire are black. https://www.2carpros.com/images/external/87613534.gif

i am having a fuel issue. we replaced the fuel pump after not getting any fuel to the engine and it did not solve the issue. We noticed that the fuel pump relay was not clicking and tried a different relay with no solution. i have tested for power at the pump and got noting, after finding that an incorrect fuse was in the PCM slot, we were able to hear the fuel pump engage one time. but the car would not start. took the fuel line loose from the injector rail and noticed a little fuel but was not sure if it was from the last time it ran. There is no blockage between the pump and the rail. car has spark and runs on ether and i highly doubt all injectors are bad. i am pretty good with a DMM but i just do not have the time at the moment to spend so long on an electrical issue but at this point i am leading my search to the PCM/ECM. Help me. i am going in circles trying to get this started. I already messed up a connector for a fuel injector getting the rail off so i am just baffled at such an issue. any advice or testing i will do.

Hello,

It sounds like the A/T relay might not be working right. Here is the fuel engine wiring diagram so you can see how the system works. The PCM turns the relay on so it must see the engine cranking over or it wont turn the relay on. When you turn the key to the on position without cranking it do you hear the pump prime?

Here is a guide to help you test the wiring:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-wiring

Here are the engine wiring diagrams.

Check out the diagrams (below).

Please let us know what happens.

Cheers, Ken

I have only heard the pump prime once. but after I disconnected the fuel line from the rail it did not try to re-prime. I am not at the car for a while so this post might go cold for a few days but I am still open to all suggestions. I will try them all until this works.

While cranking see if you have power to both sides of the fuel pump fuse if you do the relay is working.

One of the terminals to the fuel pump module is burnt? If so probably a bad fuel pump.Do you have power and ground to the fuel pump while cranking the engine?

I cranked the car up. Drove it from my carport out into my yard. A few minutes later I got in in, attempted to start it up...All it would do is crank over, but would not start up...I checked to see if voltage was coming so fuel pump, since I could never hear pump come on.. Found there was no voltage, so I though fuel pump relay... I purchased fuel pump relay from local shop. He let me look in his shop manual to find location for relay, but shop manual kept the location secret, it would not tell me where it was.
Came home, searched all over the internet, and still no success, still can't find the relay...
Any idea where it might be located?

A failed fuel pump is much more likely.

There is no separate fuel pump relay. It is part of the Electronic Control Module, (ECM) relay. That relay has eight terminals on it.

Thx, your answer is different from all others I have asked,, Some say it is on the right side, in the glove compartment area. Others say it is on the drivers side, bolted to the center console...You say it is in the ECM module, but you did not say where the ECM module is.
Why did they make this car so different, as for as where relays are located..
I am working on this car for a neighbor, and everytime I look at that thing trying to diagnose the problem, it reminds me never to purchase a Mitsubishi for my own ride

You misinterpreted my reply. I did the same thing too when I reread it. The fuel pump relay is not in the Engine Computer, (ECM). There is an ECM relay that sends 12 volts to the Engine Computer. There is a second, totally separate relay built into that assembly, and that one is for the fuel pump. It would make sense to call it the "ECM / Fuel Pump" relay, but they don't. It's just called the "ECM" relay.
