No gears everything is neutral except park?

I was driving when i lost my gears as in everything is neutral except park, unplugged the battery and got the gears back for a short time before it happened again.

The first thing I would do is check the transmission fluid level and condition.

If the fluid level is good and does not smell burnt, I would run the codes to see which ones are stored, which will guide us to the problem.
