No fifth gear

First through fourth shift fine, but it will not go into fifth it just grinds. any idea what it could be? linkage?

If you turn the car off will it go into the gear it grinds into with it running?

If someone is watching at the transmission while your shifting is the cable and linkage moving?

Yes linkage is moving and when car is off it seems like it goes into 5th

Then most likely you have a bad 5th gear synchro blocker ring.Thats what let's the gears change without grinding.

I have had a few of those transmissions apart that were grinding into only certain gears and that's what is was.
