I have a 2008 Nissan XTerra. My tank was only a 1/4 full. I stopped to put in gas. It only took 3 gallons and the auto stop clicked off the nozzle. It was obviously not full. I hung up the nozzle and waited about one full minute deciding what to do. I did not screw on the cap. Suddenly about a quart of gas erupted out of the fill neck about a foot high and sprayed all over my clothes and shoes. The car was off. When driving the vehicle it emits a smell of gasoline. I tried to gas it up again the following day and the same thing happened, so its not a one-shot deal.

Any idea what could cause this?

Hi there,

Thank you for the donation,

I would be thinking that the EVAP system mis blocked and the tank is over pressurizing, normally they wont eject fuel as yours dose, but they normally take ages to fill, i would be getting a scan done and checking for any EVAP related codes, and get a mechanic to inspect this first hand as the tank may have to be removed to fix this problem, start here.
