Service engine indicator light On

The 'Service Engine' indicator light came On. I noticed that when accelerating the car mainly after changing gear, it goes slow for a moment then speed up, I also noticed a minor noise in the exhaust pipe when accelerating. I have tried to located the fuel filter to replace it just in case, but I can't find the filter location.
Can someone provide me any clue that help with this issue.K miles
