cAR STARTS AND IDELS SMOOTHLY THEN AT 1500+ RPM BEGINS TO HAVE ENGINE SHAKE AND NOISE AND POWER LOSS. fUEL HAS BEEN CHECKED FOR QUALITY AND IS ok, SLIGHT BACKFIRE HAPPENS WHEN TESTED ABOVE 1500. I SUSPECT EXHAUST OBSTRUCTION SINCE FUEL IS FINE AND IDEL SMOOTH AND START IS NORMAL. wHAT CAN i DO TO CONFIRM THIS?

ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE APPRECIATED

i'M ENCLOSING $20 i NEED A RESPONSE qUICKLY!

BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES -2000 Nissan Xterra SE
Page 1 of 1
Exhaust System Backpressure
Visually inspect exhaust system for dents, damage and leaks. Repair or replace as necessary. Exhaust system can be checked using a vacuum or pressure gauge.
If using a vacuum gauge, connect vacuum gauge hose to intake manifold vacuum port. Start engine. Observe vacuum gauge. Open throttle part way and hold steady. If vacuum gauge reading slowly drops after stabilizing, check exhaust system for a restriction.
If using a pressure gauge, remove front oxygen sensor. Connect a 0-5 psi pressure gauge. Run engine at 2500 RPM. If exhaust system backpressure is greater than 2 psi, exhaust system or catalytic converter is plugged. Repair or replace as necessary.

[quote:90f6a3285b="quizatz"]Engine Performance problem
2000 Nissan Xterra 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 65000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
Yesterday Merlin 2021 answered a question at 3:32 edt. Still have the problem and suspect fuel quality.
Car starts and idles fine, as soon as 1500+ RPM is hit it sputters and stalls. After 24 hrs sitting started up and went to 4000 rpm and held with no problem if it were exhaust obstruction this would not have happened would it? Put in 17 gals of high end fuel and the problem is back! I'm thinking water went to top of tank fuel, car ran fine, then new fuel in mixed all up and now impurities are causing problem again. So, do you think I'm right that it must be fuel? If so how can I SAFELY remove aprox 18 gallons from a tank with a syhon defense in the filler neck?

Sometimes a clogged exhaust can vary in the circumstances.
To remove the fuel you can either use the fuel pump to pump it out (remove fuel hose from fuel rail and attach a hose to a collecting tank, loop the fuel pump relay to get it running with ignition switch on)

Or drain it from the fuel tank via the drain plug (some models are not equipped with drain plugs)

If engine is equipped with EGR system I would suggest disconnecting the EGR valve vacumn hose to test.
