I just purchased a 1985 Nissan 720, and one of the previous owners installed a 4 inch body lift. Everything looks good, but one of the joints on the steering column is screwed together with a big piece of rubber in there. It looks like it might not supposed to be there, maybe a temporary spacer. I am wondering, what do you think? Is there a piece I can order that would help me out here, or am i good with it the way it is, or should I tear the whole column out and order a new one? Also, the speedometer does not work most of the time, sometimes it works, but it moves around freely, any suggestions?

I think what you're referring to is a "rag joint" in the steering shaft. Look at another similar truck or have a mechanic take a peek. You should be able to drive up to a shop and just ask them to take a quick peek.

That type of joint isolates vibration and gives the shaft some flexibility. It should not be bending or twisting significantly as you turn the steeing wheel.

If your speedometer uses a cable, check the end where it goes into the gear that goes into the transmission. The cable must have a square end. It will slip if it is rounded off. If there is a speed sensor and no cable, suspect the speed sensor as a common problem.
