There is not a lot that you can do yourself here apart from check the level & condition of the transmission oil, if it is low, dirty and smell burnt, you will have to get it into a transmission specialist for a test & report, if this looks ok, check that the selector linkage is ok and that the transmission is selecting at the box, (check this engine off for safety) if that is working it will be an internal fault.
