Can be a bad pump? I need to replace it again?

Hi!

I replaced my fuel pump. after I replaced it the check engine light came on the codes that it showed were PO181 and PO183. So, I called up the Nissan dealership and talked to the repair guys there. They said it can only be a bad pump and I should replace it again. So I did. As soon as, I replaced the pump the same codes keep coming up. So I don't think it's the pump. So my question is. Is there something else I need to replace when replacing the fuel pump?

Thank you!

I believe it's an aftermarket pump. I ordered it from NAPA. The only thing that I got was the pump by itself nothing else came along with.

I have tried everything. The dealer is stumped, other mechanics are stumped and I have ruled out that the gas pump is emitting some kind of electrical interference (I think). When I am at the gas pump and after I have finished pumping the gas, put the cap back on, the car won't start without being given alittle bit of gas. This is very unusual and not the way the car is supposed to start. I can then drive away 10 feet, shut off the car and then it will start fine. It starts fine anywhere else at anytime of the day no matter how long it has been sitting but it won't start after pumping the gas at the gas station. I have tried filling at different intervals (empty to full, half empty to full, etc...). It still won't start right away. I have tried sitting in a parking lot with the gas tank open and it will still start. I have tried just sitting by the gas pump, turn off the car, wait a few minutes and the car will still start. I have tried turning the key to "on" for a few seconds and then off again and then to the "on" position for a few seconds and then off again and it still won't start while at the gas pump. The dealership had run the error codes and replaced the spark plugs and a sensor and a filter but it still didn't start at the gas pump. Could it be something in the gas tank that is loose that is being disrupted by the gas being pumped in? What is left to look at?

You're problem pretty much has to be related to the pump itself. My guess might be that the pump is reacting to sudden temp change in the fuel but you're going to have to pull the tank down to investigate further.

My car started giving me problems after I took it on a long road trip. It started overheating. At first they told me it needed a radiator flush, but I couldn't afford it so I kept driving it. After a few weeks, it wouldn't start, so a relative who is a mechanic told me it was the gas pump that needed to be replaced. I had a friend take out the old gas pump, so now the car doesn't have a gas pump at all. I had it towed to Pep Boys, and they started asking me for parts not even the dealership carried. Now I'm stuck with the car without a gas pump and have no idea how to get it running again. Is it possible to order a used gas pump online or is it only from the dealership that I can order it?

Where's the old assembly?

Fuel pumps are part of an assembly and are a commonly-replaced item. All auto parts stores will have them or can order them. The question is whether it will come installed in a new housing already, or if it is just the pump and motor that has to be installed into the original housing. Often a new pump is available both ways.

There are other parts that may need to be removed, but they are not replaced. Since those are not commonly replaced, they will usually not be available at auto parts stores. Those will be dealer-only items, and even they may have to special-order them.

You can also find missing parts at a salvage yard, but if selling you a certain part renders the rest of the fuel tank unusable, you can expect to have to buy the entire tank. Often they will have a tank that was damaged in a crash so it's already unusable. They'll sell you parts from those very inexpensively.

The dealership can order any part that went into building the car, as long as it's still available. Normally it's Fords that parts aren't available after just a few years. They do a very poor job of supporting their products. Your car is 12 years old. That's a fairly long time to supply replacement parts so what you need may be no longer available from the manufacturer unless the same parts were used on much newer models. That's when a trip to the salvage yard is needed.

Auto repair shops routinely deal with the salvage yards too. All they have to do is figure out the parts that are needed or missing, then call the yard with their list. It may take a day to have someone remove them from the car, but then they often deliver them right to the repair shop.

are you certain its a fuel problem? if its getting to injectors and stops there then injectors are either clogged or not pulsing. will need to test each injector. may want to check compression on cylinders and check spark, may not even be fuel related issue.

I have gotten down to the fuel pump in a 1996 Nissan Sentra, but cannot find the clip that releases the assembly. I have taken out the float and can access the pump, but cannot seem to release it to remove it. Any suggestions? A picture would be great.

Thanks.

Thanks rasmataz. I've tried this but with no luck. The chamber is held in place by something. I'm afraid to use too much force for fear of snapping something off. The attached photo is what I am looking at - "front" is on the left.

Engine Mechanical problem
1995 Nissan Sentra Four Wheel Drive Automatic

i was driving my car one day and it was running fine until i went to a service station. When i pulled out of the yard the car started to rear up like i was pressing gas reallly hard but i wasnt, and it did this all the way home even when i pressed brakes. I left it for a day or two then decided to try again it was fine for about three days then it turned off when my gas level got to low i am just wondering before my husband changes the fuel pump is that the problem????

Have your husband clean the entire throttle body, including the butterfly and throttle cable. Sticky carbon buildup within the TB probably caused the throttle cable stayed engaged even when you remove your foot from the accelerator pedal.

Engine Performance problem
1994 Nissan Sentra 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 210K miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
My car began cutting off every now and then starting a few months ago. It wasn't frequent and only happened when I first started the car, drove down the street and stopped. It kept cutting off more frequent so we replaced the fuel injectors, and cleaned the throttle. Check everything else, car seemed to run okay for a while. Then the car would have trouble starting, and just wouldnt fire. Finally it would not fire anymore and I had it towed to a shop. They said it cranked up fine and the fuel pump was working. A few days later the car wouldn't fire anymore unless I banged the fuel tank a few times, then I would hear the pump kick in. Also, if I sprayed starter fluid to the intake filter she would fire, so this let me know it had to be the fuel pump. This process worked for about two weeks until she gave out. I wanted to make sure there was nothing else I could do before I replace it?

Check the fuel pressure before you condemn the fuel pump/and remove the back seat and double check the fuel pump connector-

Or disconnect the fuel filter turn key to On and observe for fuel -No fuel the pump is defective-

Your car doesn't have a carburetor. It should be fuel injected.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

I have a nissan sentra, 1990, manual transmission, 1.6L

the car has always ran really well. couple of days ago put a new stereo in, it died. replaced battery, ran for a day and half, died, replaced alternator, ran a day died. it will start and run about a min then dies, won't start again unless i wait about an hour then does the same thing. I'm moving on to the fuel system. is there directions on diagrams on how to change the fuel pump and fuel filter. I had both barrery and alternator check, they are fine, should be since they are new. anyway any diagrams or directions would be of great help

fuel filter wouldn't cause engine to stall. inspect your fuel pump relay before replacing your pump itself.

a relay is similar to a switch, only the vehicle's computer turns it ON or OFF instead of a human. when the relay is activated, it allows the component that it controls to operate. if for some reason the relay fails, it can no longer allow the component to operate either. your vehicle's fuel pump relay is located under the left side of the dash and should be green in color. It will be a large plastic square shaped item plugged in, it just pulls out much like a fuse does. you can go to our "first things to check" page to learn how to test an electrical relay

Recheck the lines-do you hear the fuel pump come On when key at run position? If so check fuel pressure with a gauge not the eyeball or thumb method.
