the belt has an idler pulley that keeps it tensioned, loosen that pulley. Here is a guide that will show you everything you need to see to change the alternator and all belts in this scar. https://www.2carpros.com/diagrams/nissan/sentra/1999

hi. i have a 1998 nissan sentra, 1.6 L. I need to replace the power steering belt. i have the part, it's just that getting in there to loosen off the worn belt is a really tight fit! how can i squeeze in there, and how can i replace it with a new belt? Do i have to jack up the vehicle and do it from the underside?

Hey PARAONZE,

Replacement of the belt is a straightforward job. You need to loosen the alternator adjusting bolt and pull at the belt to loosen it.

Here is a guide that will help along with a diagram, please let me know if you know anything else.

There's a bolt on the bottom of the power steering pump, which must be loosened so the pump can move forward, so the belt can be removed.

To change the serpentine belt on a 2002 Nissan Sentra GXE with a 1.8 lit engine, what part do you loosen to replace the belt? Is there an easier way to remove the first belt to put on the serpentine belt?

Rotate the belt tensioner in direction of arrow and remove belt from pulleys. Install new belt according to belt direction.

For the A/C, you need to loosen the tension on the alternator. There are two bolts/nuts to loosen. The first one is the nut that is holding the tension bolt, and then the tension bolt itself. Once that is done, you can remove the belt from the alternator and A/C pulleys.

For the water pump, it is similar, but you need to do it on the power steering pump. If you are looking at the front of the engine (where all the pulleys and belts are), the P/S pump will be on your left hand side, next to the thermostat.

After loosening the adjusting bolt at power steering pump, the pump should be able to be moved inwards to release the tension on the belt.
Pull hard at the belt. Losen the power steering pump lower bolt if necessary.
