front brake rotor removal

One of my buddies at work owns a 2003 Nissan Pathfinder with a 3.5 V-6 I think. Any way, over the weekend we tried to replace the brake pads and remove the rotors for machining. We could not figure out how to do it. We then installed the new pads back on without doing anything to the rotors because they lookes good and his wife was complaining about not having a car. Is it o.k. to do this ; and if not how do we remove the rotors to make the repair properly. Thank you for your help.

2 or 4 wheel drive? You can slap pads on but the braking peformance will suffer greatly.New pads need a clean flat surface to mate to for maximum stopping power

Thank you for the reply. The vehicle in question is a four wheel drive, but not all wheel drive, My guess would be that the hubs are engaged but the transfer case can be locked and unlocked due to the fact that the half-shafts would turn while rotating the rotor with the engine off. We also have decided to cut or replace the rotors due to a pulsing pedal with the brakes applied. Thank you again

Need to remove the outer hub, you will then see the parts to remove to get the hub off to replace the rotor
