Differentials are very sturdy items and normally give you may years of trouble free operation, the most common cause of failure is low oil due to a leak, wrong oil used, contaminated oil usually only with X's that do river crossings and don't check for water ingestion from the breather, incorrect bearing & gear set pre loads and clearances, this is not common but can be the case if re built by a unqualified person that dose not understand the importance of the correct set up procedure, and of course just plain wear and tear,i hope this answerers your question.
