2000 Nissan Micra Gear stick does not return to centre

2000 Nissan Micra Front Wheel Drive Manual

I have a suspicion that there is either a missing or broken spring somewhere. Is this something I can do myself if I had the spring or is it far inside the bowels of the transmission?

the fault will be on the selector gate .. not inside the transmission .. it may be worn and needs replacing !
