The rubber boots need replacing - should axle be done too?

How long have they been opened?
If a few weeks, you might be okay...


It may not be much more to get replace that axle shafts.

They have been like that for a few years, so I guess the axle too?

Yeah, I would say. Couple options for you if money is tight. Get a couple from the junkyard. Genrally, the worse that happens is when they finally give out is that you are stranded. So if you can live with that, wait until they go. Typically they start making noises first.
