Fuel filter?

Don't think is the engine mount, trans or fuel filter.

Most probably it is electrical, could be the fuel pump electrical, intermittent contact.

Understand Nissan have some problems with the fuel pump wires in tank, check that out, pull with a little force against the wires and see if it breaks off. The wires are quite stiff so it can be in position but the wire is broken and provides intermittent contact.

yes it is generally located right next to the brake booster chamber and on the firewall

A mechanic recently told me that I need to do something about my fuel filter, he said it could be cleaned out. Is it ok just to clean it out or should it be replaced? The car sometimes doesn't want to start and I have to try a few times before it actually does start.

You don't have a replaceable fuel filter. All you have is a fuel strainer inside your gas tank.

There is a filter built into the pump, however the description sounds more like a failing pump as a filter would act differently. It's not that hard to replace as there is an access panel to the pump under the back seat. Remove the seat then the cover, release the fuel lines and disconnect the wiring. Remove the screws and lift out the pump. Be careful of the fuel level sender and it's float. Then remove the filter from the pump. Reverse the process to install the replacement. However if you are doing all this because the car sometimes doesn't start you would likely be better off replacing the entire pump. Especially if it has a lot of miles on it. Don't go cheap on a replacement as many of the aftermarket units don't seem to last.
