2002 Nissan Maxima Intermittant engine noise

At completely random times my engine will make a machine gun like noise. It sounds as if something may be scraping against something else. When this noise occurs I don't notice any difference in performance. It does seem to occur more when I am moving the steering wheel from dead center.

Locate your power steering reservoir. Is the level good? With the engine running, you should be able to see the fluid moving. Make sure you add with ATF Dexron III fluid, not your regular power steering fluid.

Thank you for responding. Yesterday I got my oil changed and the engine stopped making the noise. I wonder if maybe the oil pump went out.
