2001 Nissan Maxima question about fuel pump

hay. yesterday in the morning I was driving my car, everithing was ok, but suddenly the engine shut off automaticly.I turned it on but again it shut off, I could only drive keeping the engine on 2000 on tachometer.then it started working normaly.In the evening same thing happened, I turned on the engine but it shut off again. when I show the car to mechnic, he said that fuel pump is not working also I need to change fuel filter,but I am not shure about the pump, because, when we took out the pump, seperatly it was working, but the mechanik insisting that the presure of pump is not good. could you give me some advise please.Thanks alot

The fuel pump can be working but not pumping the pressure or volume to maintain the correct puel pressure. The pressure at the fuel rail should be 34 psi with the FP regulator vacuum line connected, and 43 psi with the vac line disconnected. If you are below this range, you may not have enough pressure to fire the injectors. In addition, a plugged fuel filter will cause the same systoms you described. A fuel pressure test will confirm the above. Hope this helps.
